Description |
Designed for worship on a journey, or within the home on an altarpiece, this handsome icon represents important stages in the mystical life of Jesus; each set against dark blue enamel. On the upper portion of the right panel is the Crucifixion, showing Jerusalem in the background fashioned as a medieval Russian city, while God the Father oversees the death of His only begotten Son. Below, following clockwise is the Annunciation; birth of the infant Jesus; life of the Holy Family, and baby Jesus brought to the temple. On the top area of the left panel is the elevation of Christ at the moment of His joining God in Holy Union. This mystical scene is enclosed in a wreath, surrounded by angels, birds and two lions. Below depicts the baptism of the baby Jesus; His second baptism by St. John; His entrance into Jerusalem; and Christ in His glory. On the cover is seen the vacant cross, around which is written, " King of Glory, Jesus Son of God, Christ." Jerusalem is shown in fine perspective in the background encased within an oval frame surrounded by elaborate foliage. With such intricately worked and expressive detail, it is no wonder the most pious found inspiration in this lovely icon.
