San Sebastián Style Nayarit Sculpture of Seated Woman Holding an Offering Bowl - PF.0986 Origin: Nayarit, Mexico Circa: 300
BC
to 300
AD Dimensions:8.5" (21.6cm) high x 4.25" (10.8cm) wide Collection: Pre-Columbian Medium: Terracotta
It was the custom in ancient Mexico to
make
offerings of food and liquid to help the
deceased
through eternity. This seated woman
brings to
her melancholy duties the immemse
dignity of a
primitive empress. We sense behind the
clay the
very real presence of a woman attending
to her
obligations, as if the mood of the
figure reflects
that of the person who gave it as gift
for all time.
