It is immediately obvious that we are not in the presence of an ordinary bat: this is a creature of the supernatural night. The face has the fierce and haunting features of a demon, reflecting man's age-old fears about what lives in the darkness. The bat is of course a harmless, even a benevolent creature for the most part. But deep inside even the most rational person some apprehension lurks. This vessel is a stunning evocation of some primal, nightmare vision-- irrational and yet honest. - (PF.1020)
