Description |
Christ's "enthronement" at the right hand of God was the culmination of His spiritual struggles on earth. This mystical event is depicted on the top of this icon, showing God giving His only begotten Son His blessings. Above them hovers the dove of the Holy Spirit, thus forming the Holy Trinity at the center of which is a globe. Below, from right to left, is the presentation of the infant Jesus at the temple, his baptism by St. John the Forerunner, His entrance into Jerusalem and Christ's Transfiguration. This icon presents images of Jesus' natural and supernatural life in such a way the two separate realms merge in perfect harmony, as if to demonstrate Jesus' own dual nature, which was both spirit and flesh. Through art we can better appreciate this phenomenon, and understand how it affects the daily lives of devout Christians.
