Description |
Perhaps taking their design from clay vessels
first used in Babylon, such situlae were meant to
stand upright on a tripod base. They might have
served as offering vessels, containing votive gifts
of rare oils or wine. The simplicity of its shape
gives this vessel a timeless appeal. Its graceful
curves invite our touch, as they no doubt did
those of the ancient owners. Though we know
little about them, when we hold this charming
situla, we are connected directly with their
vanished world.
