Description
During an age of slow travel pious Christians found it important to carry with them objects for private worship. Each of the panels is set against blue and white enamel, which adds further perspective. On the top section of the right panel we see the elevation of Christ to heaven, presented to God the Father with a dove in the center and above representing the Holy Spirit. Below, clockwise, is the mystical Annunciation; birth of Jesus; His entrance into Jerusalem; and Christ's glory in heaven. The upper portion of the right panel shows the installation of the cross set against a background of structures and ornamentation in the style of medieval Russia. Below shows Christ greeting His disciples after the resurrection; His transfiguration; death of the Virgin Mary, followed by her enthronement in heaven. The graphic scenes of the 'worldly' life of Jesus are here beautifully blended with the supernatural in a manner that suggests the mystical is as 'real' as the physical reality. And it is this premise which lies as the heart of the faithful. - (PF.5189)
