Description |
On this cross God the Father looks down upon
the poignant scene of Christ's Crucifixion. Two
angels swoop down, their wings like fire, their
bodies stationary yet full of energy. At left Mary
Magdalen bows her head in reverence and
sorrow, with an attendant standing next to her.
At right St. John looks up at Jesus with his hands
clasped in prayer, while St. George the 'victor'
holds a spear, watching the scene in some
bewilderment. Jerusalem, in the style of a
medieval Russian town, is seen behind the barren
hills of Golgotha. At the bottom is the skull of
Adam, the earthly remains of Man juxtaposed to
the eternal nature of God above. The detailed
floral patterns on the reverse are typical of the
'Lubok' style. This collection of scenes, referring
to a single event with different levels of
perspective, is set against a background of very
lovely pale blue. Within the boundaries of this
cross are the elements, both physical and
metaphysical, which lie at the heart of the
Christian religion.
