Russian icons were used in the Orthodox Church as a means of communicating the liturgical message to the masses. Since most people were not literate, the icon would tell the story where the written word would have failed. This beautiful piece tells of Saint George, the patron saint of warriors, who slew the dragon. The blue garment Saint George wears illustrates his almost royal stature, while his red cape, juxtaposed against the red dragon, symbolizes the ferocity and passion of these two fighters. At the center of it all is Saint George’s faithful steed, a magnificent white animal who springs lightly over the dragon. The other figure depicted in the icon is unknown to us. Perhaps, she is the patron saint of the city that Saint George is trying to defend. She stands watching the horrific scene under the protective arch of the city. This masterpiece is a beautiful reminder of the power art had to teach us as well as inspire those who admire it.
