This magnificent vessel has the rare beauty of a faceted jewel, a treasure partly created by nature and partly by the hand of man. Though its splendid peacock patina is the result of the passage of time, it seems as if deliberately planned from the start. Surely the ancient Roman artisan must have known that this vessel would reach perfection centuries after he first created it. We should be grateful to him for sharing its loveliness with us. - (G.0131)
