Olmecoid Sculpture of a Standing Woman - PF.1354
Origin: Morelos, Mexico
Circa: 900 BC to 500 BC
Dimensions: 7.625" (19.4cm) high x 2.625" (6.7cm) wide
Collection: Pre-Columbian
Style: Olmecoid
Medium: Terracotta

The red pigment that adorns the hands and feet of this otherwise nude woman suggests she may be a participant in funerary rituals. In the context of Mexican tomb art, such a boldly naked figure might represent a female mourner, but also the concept of fertility and rebirth so often associated with feminine deities. There is indeed something timeless and ageless about such a figure. She is sister to the Isis of the Egyptians, to the Astarte of the Babylonians, the Venus of the classical world. In her presence we are reminded that human existence continues in an uninterrupted cycle, as it has for centuries. - (PF.1354)
