Jaguar Effigy Vessel - PF.4265
Origin: Costa Rica
Circa: 500 AD to 800 AD
Dimensions: 7.5" (19.1cm) high
Collection: Pre-Columbian
Style: Costa Rican
Medium: Terracotta

This pear-shaped vessel stands on tripod legs, which are modeled to represent the paws of the jaguar. A small jaguar body is superimposed to the side of the vessel giving the head and body a three dimensional image. From this view one can see two spotted legs that drape against the side of the vessel. The tail is raised and partially wraps around the side. The most spectacular feature of the vessel is the face of the jaguar. He is exposing his fangs that are enhanced by the red paint that outlines the mouth. The eyes are wide open and fiercely staring down any attacker who might approach. The other impressive feature of this vessel is the beautifully designed motif of jaguars. It is a continual pattern around the top of the vessel of sectioned off jaguars all in a roaring pose wearing alligator masks. It is painted in orange and black that helps to create a rhythmic scene and adds balance to this work of art. Collectively, this piece resonates power and strength that are the basic tenants to the Ancient Costa Ricans moral foundation. - (PF.4265)
