This bronze head is a beautiful, expressive representation of an ancestral figure. Its large arching eyebrows, protruding mouth, and the haunting cigar-shaped eyes undoubtedly portray the pensive, solemn, and benevolent constitution of the ancestor, who perhaps held power and a high position in Asante society. The sculptor of this bronze head has paid meticulous attention to details such as the beard and the unusual hairstyle. Such fine craftsmanship adds aesthetic qualities to the bronze head, making it a unique work of art. The designed decorations such as the circular beaded crown, the top of the hair, and the well-groomed beard hint to us of the distinguished nature and status this ancestor held and perhaps still holds in society. The wide-open eyes under the arching eyebrows emit introspection, reflection, and mystery that seem to cast a magical spell on us and its past viewers. Aside from such a magical nuance, the humanistic depiction of the personable ancestor who, perhaps, earnestly wished and tried to bring a good life and well-being to his people. The Asante tribe of West Africa is renowned for its humanistic sculptures of their ancestors. This beautiful bronze head clearly reflects the tribe’s skillful artistry and the respectful regard towards their ancestors. - (PF.2900)
