Description
A high crest at the middle of the forehead is the most striking aspect of this head. The facial features are nicely formed, lips are full and sensuous, the nose expands into wide nostrils marked by semi-circular curves. High cheekbones sweep up into the sunken eyes, overhung by heavy brows formed by a lovely swirling design in low relief. Incised lines at right angles designate hair, with the same design ornamenting the crest; which is either a coiffure or ornamental headdress. The sculptor took special care to delineate expressive facial elements, such as juxtaposing flat areas with ridges to indicate bone structure. A combination of expert sculpting, imagination and ritual purpose resulted in the creation of this very handsome head. - (PF.3449)
