This magnificent sculpture of a mother
breast-
feeding two babies is seated on a
beautiful stool
incised with geometric patterns. Proud,
noble
and nurturing, the figure radiates with
voluptuous beauty of a mother goddess.
She is
appropriately decorated to denote her
status and
significance. Her arms and sides of her
legs are
enhanced with incised patterns. Her long
hair is
neatly combed back, and her ears show
indications of earspools. She holds an
infant
cradled on both knees, watching placidly
as they
tug hungerly at her breasts. Much of
Mesoamerican culture was centered around
fertility, and this sculpture my have
been a part
of fecundity ceremonies. Boldly
sculpted, this
figure presents a touching image that is
immediately endearing.
